MANZ Moon Sighing Commitee

The Muslim Association of New Zealand Incorporated (MANZ) is committed to preserving the Sunnah of moon sighting, a cherished Islamic tradition that marks the beginning of each lunar month, including Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhul Hijjah. Our Moon Sighting Committee plays a vital role in uniting our community around these significant moments, ensuring that our religious observances align with Islamic principles and the unique conditions of New Zealand.

Our Purpose

The MANZ Moon Sighting Committee is tasked with determining the start of Islamic months by coordinating efforts to sight the new crescent moon (Hilal) locally. Rooted in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)—“Begin fasting when you see it [the crescent], and end fasting when you see it”—we aim to uphold this practice with diligence and care, fostering a sense of togetherness among Muslims across New Zealand.

Why It Matters

Moon sighting is more than a ritual—it’s a celebration of our faith and a way to connect with Muslims worldwide. In New Zealand, where our community is diverse and spread across urban and rural areas, this process strengthens our unity and ensures that our religious practices reflect both tradition and our local context.

How We Operate

  • Local Sighting Efforts: On the 29th day of each Islamic month, we encourage our community to look for the new crescent moon after sunset. Reports are collected from members across various regions of New Zealand, ensuring a nationwide effort.
  • Verification Process: Supporting the development of Islamic education programs to nurture a deOur committee, guided by knowledgeable scholars and community representatives, carefully verifies sighting claims based on Shariah criteria, such as the credibility of witnesses and visibility conditions. We consider factors like the moon’s age, altitude, and elongation while prioritizing physical sightings over calculations alone.
  • Regional Coordination: If the moon is not sighted locally due to weather or other factors, we consult with trusted Muslim organizations in neighbouring areas within similar time zones, such as Fiji, to make an informed decision.
  • Timely Announcements: We strive to announce the start of each month by the time of Isha prayer on the 29th, providing clear guidance for our community to begin fasting, celebrate Eid, or perform Hajj rituals.
